What PVC Material Actually Is
PVC stands for polyvinyl chloride, a synthetic polymer used across a remarkable range of industries. In its flexible form, which is what patch production uses, PVC is soft, durable, and precisely moldable. It is completely waterproof, resistant to UV degradation, and flexible enough to bend without cracking or distorting. These properties are why military PVC patches and tactical gear patches have adopted this material so comprehensively. The environments these patches operate in would degrade fabric alternatives over time. PVC simply does not absorb water, fade under sun exposure, or crack under physical stress in the way embroidery or printed patches eventually do.
Step One: Preparing the Artwork
Every custom PVC patch begins with artwork preparation, and the requirements differ significantly from embroidery or printing. The design must be structured as a layered file that maps each color as a separate element, because PVC patches are built up layer by layer during production. Elements that will be raised above the background must be clearly identified in the design file so the mold can accommodate those elevations.
Vector files are strongly preferred because their mathematically defined paths translate directly into the precision of mold production. Every edge in a vector file is sharp by definition, which is what you want in a patch where edge quality is one of the primary indicators of production quality. Step Two: Creating the Mold
